Ultrasonic Contact Impedance (UCI) Hardness Tester

An impressive and enduring diamond

The UCI method (Ultrasonic Contact Impedance) enables a quick and easy evaluation of hardness indentations according to Vickers without using a microscope. A Vickers diamond is attached to the lower end of a metal rod which is excited to oscillations by piezoelectric elements. When the diamond penetrates the material to be tested, there is a change in the resonant frequency of the metal rod. This change increases as the indentation surface becomes larger. Because of the size of the indentation surface on its part is a measure for the hardness, there is a direct relationship between the frequency change and the material hardness. The evaluation of the measurement just takes a few milliseconds !

In our range of portable hardness testers, we offer a portable, Ultrasonic Contact Impedance (UCI) technique based hardness tester, Model alphaDUR, standardized according to ASTM A 1038 from our principal company M/s BAQ GmbH, Germany.

This UCI hardness tester is offered with narrow handheld probes having Vickers diamond at the tip and in different testloads to suit a wide range of applications. It is most ideal to determine material properties within narrow tolerances.

Typical applications include the following:

  • Testing of fine grained materials of different masses, shapes and in (Induction/Carburized) hardened mechanical parts.
  • Measurements on finished assemblies, parts having smooth and polished surfaces.
  • Hardness testing on layers e.g. copper, chromium etc on steel cylinders.
  • Testing on finished precision parts, gears, bearing raceways etc.
  • In container and pipeline construction, welds & HAZ are also evaluated.
  • Measurement in grooves, gear tooth flanks and roots.
  • Ion nitrided stamping dies and molds, forms and presses, thin walled parts etc.
  • udging the mechanical characteristics and wear resistance of steels as well as about the ageing process of metal parts

The instrument provides for a high measuring accuracy, conversion and display of hardness measurement in different scales, datalogging and statistical functions and is offered with all required testing accessories and peripherals.
